Uttarakhand’s revered Char Dham circuit—Kedarnath, Badrinath, Gangotri and Yamunotri—has welcomed a staggering 56,18,497 pilgrims in 2023, eclipsing the previous peak and setting a fresh benchmark for religious tourism in the state.

Record‑breaking Footfall

The 2023 season saw devotees from across India and abroad flock to the four holy shrines, pushing the cumulative count beyond 56 lakh for the first time. Earlier in the year, the tally had already crossed 50.56 lakh by September 14, underscoring a steady surge in interest.

Focus on Safer, Smoother Pilgrimage

State authorities have intensified preparations to manage the swelling crowds while safeguarding their well‑being. Key upgrades include expanded medical facilities, tighter traffic control, reliable drinking water, improved sanitation, and additional parking and lodging options along the mountain routes.

Emergency response teams—comprising district administration, police, health officials, the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and other agencies—remain on high alert, especially on the fragile Himalayan stretches where landslides and weather‑related hazards are a constant concern.

Infrastructure Boost Fuels Confidence

Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s guidance, major connectivity projects around Kedarnath, Badrinath and the other sacred sites have accelerated. New roadways, upgraded helipads and modernized pilgrim amenities have transformed the travel experience, encouraging more visitors to undertake the journey.

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami’s Remarks

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami hailed the milestone, emphasizing that every pilgrim is treated as an honored guest of Uttarakhand. He reiterated the government’s commitment to ensuring a safe, comfortable passage for all, and praised the collective effort of administrators, police, health workers, SDRF personnel, local bodies, priests and residents.

With the 2023 Char Dham Yatra breaking the 56‑lakh barrier, Uttarakhand has solidified its status as a premier destination for spiritual seekers, setting a lofty target for future pilgrimage seasons.
