New Delhi – After six years at the helm, India’s women’s cricket skipper Harmanpreet Kaur announced on Tuesday that she will hand over the captaincy in Tests, ODIs and T20Is to concentrate solely on her role as a player.

A Long Leadership Journey Comes to an End

At 37, Kaur has been a defining figure in Indian women’s cricket, captaining the side in five Tests, 51 ODIs and 155 T20 internationals. One of the crowning moments of her tenure arrived last month when she helped India clinch a second straight Asian Games gold medal in the women’s tournament.

Her decision follows the recent World Cup triumph, offering a storybook finale to a captaincy filled with both highs and lows.

Decision Follows BCCI Meeting

The announcement came a day after a strategic session in Guwahati that involved Kaur, vice‑captain Smriti Mandhana, head coach Amol Muzumdar and BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia. The gathering focused on the future blueprint for the Indian women’s side, and Kaur’s subsequent statement adds a pivotal piece to the transition plan.

Team Always Came Before Personal Goals

Reflecting on her years as captain, Kaur stressed that she consistently placed the team’s interests ahead of her own ambitions. She recalled making tough calls, weathering criticism, and always aiming to build a stronger, more resilient unit.

She also highlighted the importance of opening doors for younger talent, acknowledging that not every decision would satisfy everyone but that the overarching goal was the long‑term health of the squad.

From Difficult Periods to World Cup Glory

Kaur’s spell as skipper was a blend of setbacks and landmark successes. While she endured defeats, intense scrutiny and pressure, she also experienced the pride of leading India on the world stage.

The pinnacle was undoubtedly the World Cup victory, a moment that now serves as a fitting bookend to her captaincy and underscores the significance of her departure for Indian women’s cricket.

She expressed confidence in the team’s depth and believes the side possesses the talent and foundation needed to keep progressing.

Cricket Career Is Not Over

Stepping down from leadership does not signal retirement. Kaur made it clear that she remains available for international duty and intends to continue contributing on the field, driven by her love for the game.

She thanked teammates, coaches, support staff, the BCCI, her family and fans for their unwavering support throughout her captaincy journey.

While her era as India’s captain has concluded, Kaur’s playing career is set to continue, offering the team a seasoned performer in a fresh capacity.
